About Mr. Spinozzi

A carpentry teacher who did not grow up in the trades, on the key holder that started it all and why confidence is the real lesson.

The woodshop binder

Built by my students.

Every project in these pages was built by one of my high school carpentry students, from the first cut to the finish: tables, chairs, surfboards, a guitar, a plywood dinosaur. The handful of photos with people are my own kids in the shop with me. Turn the pages and see what young builders can do.

About me and my why

Confidence is the real project. Everything else is practice.

I did not grow up in the trades. Nobody handed me a hammer. What I had, in my senior year of high school, was an idea and some curiosity. I bought a few second-hand tools and some cheap boards from the local home improvement store and tried to build a key holder. It was not pretty. It held keys. I was hooked.

I was not very good for a long time. Confidence came one project at a time: measure, cut, miss, measure again. Years later the skills were there, and I understood that the thing worth passing on was never the key holder. It was the moment you decide you can figure something out.

Now I teach carpentry to high schoolers, and I am CTE certified in Carpentry. I built this site so younger kids could start the same way: at a kitchen table, with a parent or teacher nearby and Mr. Spinozzi in their corner.

Here is my why. Every kid should be able to look at a problem, come up with a solution, and use the tools at hand to carry it out. That is the whole sequence. Add confidence and it works everywhere: in the shop, at school, and long after. I know of no better way to train it than through the trades, where the board tells you the truth and the fix is in your own two hands.

  • First build: a key holder, senior year

The simple sequence

Three steps, plus confidence. Every lesson on this site practices them.

  1. Look at the problem

Slow down. What is really going on here?

  2. Come up with a solution

Pick a plan you can actually carry out.

  3. Use the tools at hand

Build it, check it, fix it. Then do it again.
